Old houses take longer, and it is not the size

A Canton or Pontcanna terrace is deceptive. The rooms are tall, the skirting is deep, there is often a tiled or wooden hall floor with a rug on it, and picture rails, coving and a bay window in the front room. All of that is surface, and surface is what a clean is made of.

The number of bedrooms is still the right thing to quote on, because it predicts the work better than anything else somebody can tell us over a form. What we ask is that you mention the extras that are not rooms: the conservatory on the back, the second reception nobody uses, the cellar door that is really a cupboard full of bikes.

Parking, permits and the ten past nine problem

Streets here are permit parking and full by half past eight. A cleaner circling for a space is a cleaner not cleaning, and on these streets it happens.

It is one of the reasons a regular slot works better than an occasional one: the cleaner learns your street, learns where there is usually room at ten, and stops losing your minutes to it.

Shared houses and busy households

A lot of these terraces are shared between working adults rather than lived in by one family, which changes what people want. Kitchens and bathrooms matter more than bedrooms, and a weekly visit is usually worth more than a longer one every fortnight.

If the house is shared, tell us which rooms are in and which are private. A door that is meant to stay shut stays shut, and the report says so rather than leaving you wondering whether somebody went in.

If something has been missed

Say so from your account. For 48 hours after the report arrives there is a button there to ask us to come back, with room for a note on what was not right, and the office sees the request. You do not have to ring anybody or find a polite way to say it to their face, which is the part most people dread more than the missed job itself.

We would rather come back than have you quietly stop booking. That is a commercial position as much as a decent one: a customer who says nothing and leaves teaches us nothing, and a customer who asks us back from their account within the 48 hours hears from us to fix a time.

Cellars, conservatories and the rooms that are not bedrooms

These houses collect rooms that no form asks about. A conservatory that is really a second sitting room, a cellar that is dry and used, a box room with a desk in it, a converted attic with a shower.

Tell us and the time goes on the quote. What we will not do is add rooms on the day and hand you a bigger bill for them: the number you accepted is the number, and anything extra is agreed with you first.

If you are out when we come, leave a key or a code. It is held encrypted and opened for one cleaner, for one visit.

How we leave it

The bit you notice

We go the extra mile to make your home feel special. Little touches we know you will enjoy, on every visit.

  • Two folded white towels stacked on a shelf with a sprig of eucalyptus

    Towels folded and squared.

  • Two towels folded into a bow on an oven door handle

The bow on the oven door.

  • A sofa with cushions squared and blankets stacked and folded

    Cushions squared, blankets stacked.

  • A toilet roll with the end folded into a fan

    The paper folded, hotel style.

Places on CF11

That list is the same one the quote form reads, so if a place is named here you will get a price for it, and if it is not you will get a straight no rather than a call back.

What you get

A photographic report after every visit. What was done, the reason for anything skipped, and how long the cleaner was there.

The same cleaner, named before they arrive. Not a different stranger each time.

Move or cancel any visit, free, until noon the day before. Not a phone call to somebody who will try to talk you out of it.

A price before you commit. Three answers on this page, no phone call, no survey, no card taken.

Our cleaners are not there to get out of the door. They are there to leave your home properly clean.

Every cleaner at The Whistle Co completes two weeks of formal training before their first clean, keeps training, and has their work reviewed regularly. Every room is cleaned to a detailed checklist and the finished work is photographed, so your home is in good hands.
